Main Line PC Consulting is once again proud to present this month's spotlight web site. The site is local personal training and fitness company Main Line Workouts. We had a lot of fun with Main Line Workouts. The site design was a little bit of a challenge and called for an old school retro style design. The site is not your typical professional business design that most are probably used to seeing, but has a really fun flavor. We like to demonstrate our diversity in the sites we have been fortunate to design and develop. Please visit Main Line Workout’s site at…http://www.mainlineworkouts.com/
Within the past week we added a new page to Main Line Workouts as they are now a proud distributor of health and nutritional products from Amway International. Click to see all they have to offer. There are some really nice products available at some great prices…

Web Tricks and Tips Part III - Main Line PC Consulting
The initial step is usually the submission of your site to various search engines. This can take some time, so this step should be done early on in the process . It can sometimes take up to 2-4 weeks for your site to get indexed. There are many free sites who will be willing to submit your link for you, or you can pay for a company that will give you faster results and greater exposure. Keep in mind through, if your site is out there, the spiders and search engines will find you. How? Through the use of keywords and proper code on your site. There are certain aspects of your site which will allow your site to become more attractive to spiders. For example, proper page tags and indexing can play a big role in making your site search engine friendly. Ask your web designer for specific details. Keywords and meta tags play a significant role in your site coming up higher in search engine results. What can you do? Think about and come up with the best 5 or 6 words or phrases that best describe your site and the services it has to offer, and use them as a focal point for your keywords and tags. In addition, search in your field on Google, Yahoo, and MSN, and find out how your competitors are coming up in searches. Remember the old saying from the Godfather, “keep your friends close, but your enemies closer” =J I am not saying to simply copy what your competitors are doing, but it may give you a skeleton and other ideas that will make your company stand out from the rest.
The next step involves being listed on directories, not only in your field, but location. For example, being in the web design business, I am listed on many web designer directories. I also made sure that I am listed on the Philadelphia business directories as well since I am based in that area. Those directories are not only a great way to advertise your business where specific consumers are looking for your services, but will get your site noticed by the web crawlers and in turn lead to higher search results. There are many free sites out there. Keep in mind however, that sites are free for a reason. Sometimes, being listed on a bunch of a free directories may not always lead to better results than being listed on paid ones that are more search engine friendly. I have had a great experience with the free sites and will continue to use them but sometimes you do need to pay up.
Another step in successful search engine optimization is social networking. Making sure that you have a site created on Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, and even videos posted on YouTube can really get your business noted. Along those same lines, blogs, press releases, and articles really provide a nice boost to your search engine rankings if done in the correct manner. It allows other business to interact with you and establishes a professional presence online that you are an expert in your field. Other companies and clients will begin to respect you and recognize your company name. In addition, these sites also have great tags and tend to rank very high in the major search engines. I know from my experience, the press releases I have produced and written sometimes rank higher than my home site in some Google searches.
In conclusion, the trick is to be diverse and not to optimize the same way. There are so many users who searching under so many different sites and in so many different ways. The only way to be successful and reach those customers is to be diverse yourself.
I hope this article has been helpful to you. It is meant to provide a brief overview of the steps involved in search engine optimization. There is much more involved and much more that could be written about of course. In next month’s article, I would like to explore Web 2.0. I want to continue to utilize and research this tool before I write an article on the effectiveness. Thank you as always for reading, and I look forward to your feedback and comments!

Web Design Building Blocks - Part 2
With that being said, begin to re-organize the content of the site into meaningful sections. Inventory all information you have including text, videos, or images and decide which items should be included or excluded. Once that has been achieved, build some sample pages and begin to test and gather a navigation scheme. Let other users interact with the site and make any changes as needed. My suggestion is to start with the home page and make any changes that are necessary. This page ultimately drives the site and any changes which need to be made. This is an important point to remember and will avoid frustration later on in the design process. In fact many designers will often use the home page as a template. So it is better to tell them now rather than later on if you do not like the design.
Last comes the icing on the cake. It is very easy to get very involved with all the bells and whistles right from the start. Try to avoid this temptation and remember that it is the content that is vital to the site. Yes, it is important to have a web site which is visually appealing and have elements moving and sliding which catch your eye. However, this can all to easily detract from the site as well and distract the users from obtaining the most important information about your company which is contained within the text. So in other words, the text comes first. Think about the most important information that would like your customers to obtain. Put the bells and whistles on these items so that it grabs a potential client’s eye. Make the pictures, videos, or highlights enhance this information further so it entices the client to read ahead and purchase a product or hire your company. In other words, use your bells and whistles wisely. Don’t use too many and use them effectively, not just to fill in space or for ascetics alone.
The last step is to test the site completely. Be sure that all information is spell checked, accurate, and complete. Test all of the links on the site to ensure none are broken. Cross-browser check your site in multiple browsers and platforms to ensure there are no compatibility or font related issues. And check the loading speed of your site. Although most users are using higher speed internet connections, there are still some who are not and you do not want to forget those users.
Thank you again for taking the time to read my article. Next month we will focus on site marketing and getting users to your site. After all, your site is only effective if potential clients see it. In addition, you spent all of your hard earned time, money, and energy on this site, it’s time to show it off!
Web Design Building Blocks - Part1
The first question I like to ask my clients is “what are your goals and objectives for the site”. In other words, what would they like their user to gain from being on their site. And as a result, what information would they want the user to walk away with from visiting their site. Image is an important piece to this equation as well. The company’s goals and objectives and image that they are trying to portray should be clear throughout their site.
The second phase involves gathering information. Think about what information should be contained within the site and who has the knowledge to provide such information. Have these staff members gather the information and meet to decide which information is pertinent to the site. This information must also fulfill the user’s expectations and overall scope of the site.
Next, once the information is organized and the scope is beginning to become clear, start thinking about what and how much technology should be needed and what the expense may be. For example, do you need a digital camera to take pictures? How much bandwidth is needed? Is there a database needed or secure a portion of the site? How much support and ongoing maintenance will the site need?
When putting the site together, thinking of the audience can play a key role in organizing in the process of designing a web page. Know who will be surfing your site and appeal to them. Let them critique a sample portion of the site and see if it appeals to them. After all, they are your potential clients and could play a key role in making a sale or getting the right type of clientele to your site. Once this has been established, make the correct changes and make sure that all information reflects the goals, values, and intent of the person or company. And make sure that it is abundantly clear and consistent on each page of the site. In may be a good idea at this point to set a maximum page count to ensure that they project is moving along and is on track with the design and allocated budget.
These are the first important steps for designing a web site. Although they seem tedious and time consuming, it can save a lot of headaches and frustration later on, believe me. I hope that these initial steps are beneficial for you and thank you for your time and reading this article. For any questions or comment, please reply to sal@mainlinepcconsulting.com
